SOULBOUND STUDIOS PARTNERS WITH IMPROBABLE, MAKER OF SPATIALOS TECHNOLOGY TO DELIVER HIGHLY ANTICIPATED MMORPG CHRONICLES OF ELYRIA

Chronicles of Elyria Has Already Passed One Million Dollars on Kickstarter, A Few Days Left to Go

BELLEVUE, WASH. – June 1st, 2016 – Soulbound Studios, whose upcoming game Chronicles of Elyria sits at over one million dollars on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, with two days remaining in the campaign, has partnered with technology startup Improbable. Improbable’s SpatialOS platform will enable the massively multiplayer online role-playing game’s unique persistent world in which player characters grow old, die, and can be reincarnated.

SpatialOS is a distributed operating system that enables developers to create simulations inhabited by millions of complex entities, and allows game worlds and other simulated environments to run seamlessly on thousands of servers in the cloud. In order to create the dynamic and immersive MMORPG experience in Chronicles of Elyria, Soulbound Studios will be building their Soulborn Engine and the rest of the Chronicles of Elyria back-end on the foundation of SpatialOS. With support for load balancing, recovery, replication, and cross-process communication, SpatialOS provides the core fabric and infrastructure required for Chronicles of Elyria.

"People have been asking us how we plan to get a hundred thousand players spread across the largest geographic area in a video game to date. This is it! With the help of SpatialOS, we can do it faster than most people think possible, and with a smaller team,” said Jeromy Walsh, Owner and CEO of Soulbound Studios. "We've been talking with the folks at Improbable for nearly six months now, evaluating the platform, speaking with their CEO and team, and experiencing first-hand how committed Improbable are to helping make Chronicles of Elyria a success.” Jeromy Walsh added, “We hope our work on Chronicles of Elyria may someday benefit other game developers as well."

Instead of using the time and resources normally allocated for creating core server features, Soulbound Studios, relying on SpatialOS, can instead focus on bringing players the innovative gameplay mechanics that won Chronicles of Elyria the “Best Indie MMO” Award from MMO Games when it debuted at PAX East. These mechanics include aging & dying, souls and reincarnation, offline player-characters, dynamic, non-repeatable quests, player-created contracts, player-run governments, and most importantly, a dynamic, event-driven story engine. Using SpatialOS to underpin the game’s engine will allow many more players to interact in a persistent, developing world where choices can have lasting consequences.

“I’ve been lucky enough to work on some truly visionary projects, from Bungie’s Halo Franchise to Microsoft’s Hololens,” said Art Director Eddie Smith. “SpatialOS is the perfect platform for us to build our vision of a new kind of MMO.”

Improbable, founded in 2012, is regularly identified as one of the most exciting startups in Britain. Backed by Andreessen Horowitz – one of the only European startups to be funded at the Series A stage by the legendary Silicon Valley investor – Improbable has recruited more than 90 staff from 22 countries to create a new paradigm for online world building.

“Improbable was founded to make the kind of game we wanted to play but could not find,” said Herman Narula, founder and CEO at Improbable. “Then we realized we want to enable many experiences that break the boundaries of traditional game technology so we built a platform for developers. Chronicles of Elyria has the potential to innovate and entertain players in new ways and we are excited that SpatialOS can help a team like Soulbound focus on bringing its game to life.”

Is this the big announcement?

Yup.

“Must I undertake to prove that the slave is a man? That point is conceded already. Nobody doubts it. How should I look today, in the presence of you, dividing, and subdividing a discourse, to show that men have a natural right to freedom? To do so, would be to make myself ridiculous, and to offer an insult to your understanding.” - Paul Gilroy

Does this seem insignificant to you? There is a thread on this exact issue of server tech that has garnered over 7000 views which highlights one of the major points of skepticism surrounding this game: server tech. This should eliminate that argument for any reasonable person and instill a lot more confidence in the game which translates to more money and more players. And quite frankly a really good chance the game will actually be made!

This is HUGE.... OMG

I went from being concerned about how a big scale war was going to run on the server. Coming from another game recently where you could visually see slower combat when approaching the 50 player mark in a "small area" so the server could keep up. And this game was promising a LOT more.

Hearing your going to be working with Improbable is exciting but also makes me slightly nervous, because this is new technology, but seem right for a game that will be genre defining to push for something that could change MMORPGs forever.

I'm sold inc 350 monies.

A lot of people were curious how such a small team was going to build/run such a massive MMO. While this Isn't very exciting for most of the player base, it is very big news for the support of the game. i guess a rough example would be of a store. If the back end is a mess the front end (the part the Users see/interact with) can't function as intended. They're building a solid foundation so the rest of the house can operate efficiently and orderly.

I love this teams philosophy of not reinventing the wheel and instead focusing their resources on being creative and intuitive on things that will make this game immersion and unique.

Couldn't be happier to see this. Swarm AI and related tech is going to change everything... and I'm delighted to see a game company at the front of this particular charge. ;)

Well done, CoE and Improbable.... though you may have to change your name, Improbable... perhaps to Spatiality; where Spatial OS gives you the foundation to make truly global scale products a reality. (Just send me a T-Shirt if you use this. Heh.)

Wow very interesting guys! I like to see start ups work together to make something even better! You could help each other to the top. However the risk of 2 start ups helping each other, is that one might out grow the other.

Anyways: Congratulations!

Great news :) Now let me talk to my lady again... I need to convince someone here.

For those of us who already have confidence in the game and in the developers, this "big" announcement was kind of a let down.

My list of concerns if officially empty now :)

Money well spent.

I was already sold on the Ideas behind this game...this is still a huge boost to making this become a reality much quicker than than I could have expected. I thought Dec 2017 was very ambitious...and I think more testing time might be needed still, but i no longer worry about Dec 2017 becoming Dec 2020. Congrats SBS and Improbable...may your partnership be the start of something amazing!

That was the first question I thought of too.
