As for wagons, it might be how the express route gets formed. Self defending convoys!
Since wild animals can be tamed straight out of the wild it is plausible that some species will be more useful/less dangerous to their trainers and later owners than a similar real life counterpart.

I hope that battlecats are as mercurial and prickly as real cats. If you try to hook them to a wagon, you should get mauled.
