About The Sanatorium

The Sanatorium is a healthcare business which aims to be a staple in the medical world of Elyria. It tries to achieve that through dedicated research and training, both in physiology and pharmacy in close contact with the University in Mirrorvale. Its location on the border of Riftwood and Blackheart gives it access to a unique and plentiful variety of herbal and animal ingredients. The placement in Parallax adds specialized training/learning facilities in our fields of expertise and access to a wide market. This is a highly teamwork-oriented and friendly group, which welcomes players with an interest in medicine and offers various spots within the hospital operation.

History

“We were wrong all along. The voices have been getting louder, speaking of the dread that has befallen our neighbors. Flesh peeling off their skins, complete insanity moving their bodies. What Demon’s work is this? We pray for it not to come for us.”

-Moriki Táhonya, Chronicler of Parallax, 0 SP

“May this be known as the start of the end of Parallax. The dreaded sore throats have made it to us this very morning. Fear is among them all. The beds have been made ready and so are the piles of wood. May the great spirits guide us to a cure for this evil upon us!”

-Moriki Táhonya Chronicler of Parallax, 0 SP

“[…] the stench, the tearing smoke and screams. The world has entered a new age. It is the age of the Searing Plague and so we shall count the years from this day on – in memory of the suffering. It is the first year of the Searing Plague, 0 SP.”

-unknown Chronicler, 0 SP

The Si’lynx Sanatorium of Infinite Cure was founded just shortly after the outbreak of the first Searing Plague. Alben Si’lynx was heading a respectable practice within the city of Parallax. In anticipation of the plague’s arrival, Alben struck a deal with the noble family of Count Blackshoes to clear a portion of the Halls of Incidence and add additional beds. It was between bookshelves and mechanisms that the plagued were treated as best as they could - no expenses spared. While there still was no cure found, the rate of survival in Parallax was much higher than in neighbouring towns. Alben and his doctors were fighting the following 2 years against the plague. The bed space in the Halls of Incidence soon became known as “The Sanatorium”. Not wanting to lose the great opportunities for research and treatment of diseases that came with the Searing Plague, Alben commissioned a structure to be built adjacent to the Halls of Incidence. During its construction, the Sanatorium was moved into a larger tent complex. 4 years after its commission, it was moved into its final building. It then was featuring a fully equipped operating room, pharmacy and alchemy laboratory, a quarantine area with silver coated walls and doors, a small library with medical reference books and an herb garden alongside a large amount of both single and shared rooms with beds. Most notable is the well protected storage room. Rumor has it that inoculations of the fiercest diseases are kept here among other highly sensitive and dangerous materials.

*“We will not let this evil befall us again. Let us raise out of these dark days strong and with our mind set on bettering the life in Parallax, Mirrorvale, all Ksana, our beloved Kingdom of Riftwood and the world beyond. With our efforts focused on the refinement of existing and the discovery of new cures, for all ailments and diseases, we will be the beacon of hope for those who suffer. I am proud to stand here today and open this very Sanatorium of Inifinite Cure.” *

-Alben Si’lynx, Opening of the Si’lynx Sanatorium of Infinite Cure, 7 SP

153 SP, the 2nd story was added on and made it the Si’lynx Sanatorium as we know it today. The most notable addition is the Griffon host, which is used for fast aerial medical support of surrounding towns and farms as well as an extension of the Pharmacy and laboratory. A small chapel was built in the inner courtyard, which offers shrines for all faiths. However dangerous the illness of a person might be, never has anyone been turned away from The Sanatorium in its entire history.

“To Mirrorvale!”

-Elyrian phrase when someone sneezes, around 53 SP

Relations and Reputation

The Sanatorium has strong relations with the county of Mirrorvale and most notable with the noble family of Blackshoes since its founding. Furthermore, it has become a staple in the eastern region of Ksana when it comes to medical treatment and research, which it does mostly in close connection with the Halls of Incidence. Their collaboration has been thriving since the founding of the Sanatorium and it appears difficult for outsiders to determine where the boundaries of each party are. Outside of Ksana it is still known for its treatment abilities and readily available inoculations, which has led to a steady stream of patients from the entire duchy. Nobles across Riftwood have called upon the doctors of The Sanatorium which has reached decent renown along the kingdom.

    Facilities

Sick rooms There is a total of 24 sick rooms available: 12 single and 12 double rooms. The single rooms are rather spacious and intended for patients of rank or those who are expected to have an extended stay. They each offer a bed, a table with chair and a window along a decent closed-off wash station. They offer full privacy for their patients. The double rooms are similar to the single rooms but have two beds and only one desk, chair and shared washroom. Patients may choose to stay in single or double rooms if their illnesses are not contagious, and room is available.

Operating Room This room looks rather scarce and simple. Only a large platform can be found in the center which patients are placed upon to be operated. The ceiling right above has a glass window and allows daylight to fall right through the window and through a glass bowl below onto the table. The glass bowl is filled with a luminescent fluid which glows bright at night and allows for treatment at any time of day. In addition, the room offers multiple sconces along the walls which are lit at any time. The room is otherwise filled with containers of needed medicine, sterilizing trollmouth saliva and wound sealing pastes among a wide variety of tools necessary for operating. Notable is a large magnifying glass mounted on an adjustable pole near the table.

The Soothing Salve The pharmacy “The Soothing Salve” is built directly onto the main Sanatorium and connected from the front desk. This allows the shop room pharmacist to also welcome any new patients. It has a large storage and shop room which carries a large variety of medicine alongside antidotes. While inoculations are kept at The Sanatorium, they are not sold directly and only administered by a doctor.

Alchemy Laboratory The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art alchemical equipment. Glass retorts can be found among a large assortment of ingredients. All medicine sold and used in the sanatorium is made and refined here except for those that are being imported from the Kingdom of Blackheart due to the lack of local and quickly spoiling ingredients. The most disputed research effort in recent years has been the find of better anesthesia.

Library The once small library has been expanded in recent years and now carries all common must-reads of the medical society. It also features some rather rare publications about the production of antidotes and inoculations.

Herb Garden Most plants kept here have a healing effect and are needed for the daily treatment and medicine production, others are kept purely for their decorative look. The garden doubles as a small recreational park for the ever-healing patients.

Storage Room The storage room is filled floor to ceiling with all possible ingredients, tinctures and salves the medical world could ever dream of. There are very few things you may not be able to find here, most of which are for sale.

Storage Vault The biggest pride of the Si’lynx Sanatorium lies well locked and guarded right behind the storage room. Not only would the loss of its contents potentially jeopardize the healing process or even the life of one of the patients, it could be far more dangerous in the wrong hands. It is speculated that even small portions of the Searing Plague are held in containers in this room, used to produce inoculations. The walls and door of this windowless room are coated with a thick layer of silver to limit the possible outbreak to a very minimum.

Quarantine Room The second most important and valued rooms are the two quarantine rooms. It is lined with silver just like the storage vault but is kept otherwise like the sick rooms. They offer a bed, chair and desk to facilitate long-term stays by patients with especially contagious or dangerous illnesses. Contact with the patients can be completely avoided if needed. It offers a small room which has a door leading to the quarantine chamber and the outside. Medicine, food or other things may be placed inside, the doctor or nurse would then leave the room and the patient may then retrieve the needed items. Communication, while difficult is possible through a filtering pipe system.

Dining Room The inner yard and garden can be seen through large glass windows, which can also be found on the opposite wall and allow for a view to the outside of the sanatorium. A large table spans from one end to the other, with roughly twenty chairs around it. If patients are unable to attend the meals in the dining room, they will be fed in their respective sick rooms. In dire times, this room is being converted into a common sick room with place for 24 beds.

Washroom This room is divided by a large white curtain. One side, which the patients may access, has a large bathtub, which is frequently filled with warm to hot water out of the nearby heater. The other side is restricted to staff access only. Bed sheets and other cloths are washed and disinfected here.

Staff Rooms Two rooms are always available to sanatorium staff to rest during long days of hard work. Beds, chairs and books are kept in the nicely decorated room. The windows here have shutters mounted on the inside to allow for rest even during daytime.

Kitchen The sanatorium cook can be seen wandering among cauldrons, ovens, stoves a fireplace and a good assortment of pots and pans. He cares for the patient’s good nutrition and accommodates special requests - even those of Kypiqs.

Dovecote Carrier pigeons can be bought at the hospital and taken home. In case of emergencies or general medical needs or communications with the sanatorium, released pigeons will fly back to the dovecote located on the rooftop. They may be picked up at any time thereafter. It is responsibility of the owners to care for the well-being of the pigeon.

Griffon Host (MedEvac) Located on the 2nd level of the sanatorium is the griffon host. It much reminds visitors of a regular stable with a large opening in the roof, which allows the direct flight of the griffon from its stable grounds. While this activity is kept to a minimum, the griffon needs to be kept active and so once every day, the flight of a griffon may be witnessed in Parallax. This allows the sanatorium to act swiftly when messengers arrive notifying the staff of emergencies in the larger vicinity of Parallax. It is rumored to also be used during military conflicts to rescue fallen or heavily injured soldiers.

I love everything about this facility you have described. I can say that Mirrorvale knows should another plague arise in this age, the marvel which is the Si'lynx Sanatorium of Infinite Cure will be the reason we were saved from pervasive illness and death.
