Why would anyone breed horses?

Why would anyone breed horses when you can breed war trison?

The immediate answer that comes to mind is cost and utility. A war trison is much larger than a horse and would most likely be less stealthy. Additionally a horse is going to probably cost less and require less resources to keep alive.

Will the resources required to sustain such a large mount be balanced enough to force everyone to think carefully before choosing to ride a war trison everywhere, or is it possible that we'll just have everyone riding the best breed-able mount in general?

I mean no matter what I imagine people will try and get the best breedable mount they can.

For an answer though, in real life why do people still have donkeys and mules if everyone could just have a horse? They require different levels of maintenance and handling, they are capable of different feats, they aren't necessarily suited to the same biomes.

Same is likely to be said for trison (or ursaphants) and horses. Horses will likely eat less, definitely require less space, perhaps they are easier to train as well. Maybe the taiga is too cold for horses, but trison can survive and then the janoan jungles are capable of allowing horses to guide through but trison cannot navigate due to space. Maybe you have to get information quickly to a neighboring county and trison aren't quite built for the speed horses are.

Again though people will probably go with what is best as long as they can afford it though, so maybe the answer to your question is some time in the future we see trisons everywhere and no longer see horses for common beast of burden tasks.

speed might be another possibility

Horses are fundamentally tools of locomotion. Just like one wouldn't pick up a knife for the job of a hammer, specialization will be key in many endeavors.
Horses will probably be faster, have more stamina, and be smaller.
This speed and stamina would allow for quick deployments of skirmishers, even if it meant dismounting and shooting before remounting and moving on among other operational uses.

Horse Archer/Messenger/faster carriages. When the game comes out we will fully understand it.

War Trison are Biome specific I do believe so there may also be detriments to taking them south.

surply and demand will dictate the price. And I prefer horses.

Been browsing and found the true answer that nobody mentioned. The Hrothi are short. They cannot ride large mounts.

Gosh this questions answers to me, Horses are versatile, durable animals that will be dominant on more battlefields then the Trisons.

The thief pockets the jewel, she hears the king's guards gathering outside and knows she cannot win a head on fight. She knows she needs tact, stealth, and cunning to get herself out of this situation. Instead of using the stairs the thief uses her trusty grappling hook and quietly repels down the tower as if she were a black widow. She lowers herself onto mount and attempts to sneak away on her WAR TRISON.. She was promptly shot in the back by the guards, the jewels were recovered..

Just because a Trison is way more cool than a Horse doesnt mean we should always use them....Trison heavy charge V Horse heavy charge.....Trison would probs win...lol

But Trison in any other combat role will be out maneuvered by Horses.

Hahaha, Deftly!

Depending on your goals and biome, it will impact the kind of animal, especially their breed, that you might need.

A sneaky thief on-the-go probably would not be so incognito by using a war trison as their exit vechile.

A knight in shining armor might prefer a horse that can move quickly and be able to hold on its animal armor.

A prince or princess might prefer a specific breed of horse with a lovely color or pattern, just for celebratory occassions where appearances matter.

And remember, this is just breeds of horses we're talking about.

Even the strongest, biggest horse won't be able to trample around a battlefield the way a war trison would.

Oh man - I actually never really thought of race constraints on mounts. That is a very fair point. I would also imagine that horses would be more suited for most every type of travel that was singular. Why would you travel around with such a large animal as a traveler through certain towns and biomes?

I imagine people would breed horses in order to breed up useful traits for jobs that horses will do better at than war trison.

Plowing fields, hauling carts, quick travel, such like. War trison are good for combat, but horses still have their uses.

So look at the differences between horses and camels irl. Horses eat grass and are efficient at maneuvering over most types of terrain but once you get into places with knolls or deserts, you risk injuring the horse's leg, causing it to become dehydrated, or die while traveling, which could lead to your death.

Camels are much better for environments like deserts because they can store additional water but are much slower. You don't get where you are going as fast, but you get there.

Lets take a look at Trison. Large herbivores, they likely have the same feeding requirements as bison, which eat all day every day. Maybe the amount of time spent riding them makes them impossible to take on a foreign war without slowing the column to a standstill every day to let them graze.

Bison are sprinters, not distance runners, so great for shock an awe, but terrible for pretty much all other applications.

The horse should have its' place in combat as well.
