Maritim aspect

hello,

do we have already an idea about the mecanism to navigate ?

i mean type of ships, number of people to use it, skills to learn ?

do we have to be a specialist (sailor) or everybody could take a boat ? will there be possibilies to have maritim fights ?

etc....

if someone has answers i'm interesing ! :) thx

Well there are rowboats, Barges, Cutters, Radiers, warboats, sailboats. We will have to research Ocean going vessels. For navigation we know there are Compasses, spyglasses, star charts, astrolabes, orreries. I would a assume sextants as well. If you look at past promos they show a lot. I believe one of the larger boats took a 9 person crew. Click for Past Promos There will also be Astronomy and under Survival skill/there is Wayfinding.

There isn't a lot of official information available yet, I'm afraid. Part of that is simply because we haven't implemented most of the maritime mechanics at this point. That said, as a designer on the project, I can answer some questions for you! :)

i mean type of ships, number of people to use it, skills to learn ?

At the launch of the game, players will have access to some basic "coastal" and lake/river craft: Barges, rowboats, small sailboats, shallow draft fishing boats, and coastal patrol craft, essentially. (Focii actually lists out the complement of available boat hulls above, I'm just listing basic categories here)

In terms of required crew, they range from 1, in the case of say a small rowboat or a dingy, up to half a dozen or so for the more complicated, large mast, ships like the coastal cutter. Each person on the crew performs a different necessary task, whether that be manipulating the rigging, manning the tiller or rudder, bilging, or what have you. Each ship has its own requirements and challenges. The coastal raider for example, is a longboat. It has a mainmast and sail, but if you want to move at speed, then everyone but the pilot needs to man the oars and start rowing. In that sort of arrangement you could need as many as 9 people to really get every ounce of performance out of the ship.

do we have to be a specialist (sailor) or everybody could take a boat ?

No! While the skills to properly navigate are necessary to do anything but sail blindly, there are no artificial gates between a player or NPC and them using the various "crew stations" of a boat. In fact, one of my favorite lore pieces we put out, The Stowaway, is actually near and dear to my heart not so much because of the cool story it tells about a young Kypiq's attempt to become an adventurer on the high seas, but because it actually shows that said Kypiq, with no experience on a ship what-so-ever, is taught by people how to raise and lower sails and other aspects of working on the ship so that by the time the story ends, he is in essence a functional crew member despite his lack of experience.

The story conveys some of the feeling we want you to have when you learn these skills yourself, in-game. :)

will there be possibilies to have maritim fights ?

Speaking of, you should read that story! It also features some maritime strategy and even... dare I say it... a buckled swash or two!

Hope that helps! :)

Im curious to know just how destructible the sailing vessels will be, perhaps more importantly how well they handle inclement weather, are the coastal cutters not meant for deep sea exploration because they are likely to sink in bad weather or they just will not hold the provisions needed for such a venture?
